Finding a good domain name in 2009

Wow, I thought finding a good domain name was hard back in 1998 (I had check whois to confirm that date) when we registered booksoft.com and again in 2000 when we registered brightblocks.com.  Its impossible these days :)

Here are a couple sites I found to help look for domain names and get inspiration:

  • This site is fast and efficient, very good for trying variations on words you're interested in, variations such as 2 or 3 word combinations, and common prefixes and suffixes
  • Note: when it tells you the domain name is available, what it really means is it can't tell for sure its not available :)  I got very excited when it told me some names were available, only to find out they're not actually.  Reading the FAQ it looks like the site does a DNS check to enable it to quickly check large numbers of names, instead of a whois query.
  • Similar idea to bustaname.com, but has a few more canned endings you can apply to a single word
  • I found this site interesting, it lets you search and browse previously owned (but now available) domain names
  • The part I liked was that you could search these previously owned domain names to find ones that contain a substring that you specify, which is an interesting way to get inspired by names people have previously registered
  • Though, most of these domain names are terrible, which must be why they are no longer owned :)
  • I didn't have a lot of success with this site, but it does let you generate random domain names with different numbers of letters which I thought had some promise
  • Wordoid was a bit of a breakthrough for me.  By the time I'd found it I'd given up on the possibility of finding a good domain name made of 1 or 2 english words, and instead concluded I'd better make up a word :)  Wordoid makes that easier, it makes up names that sound natural in english and tells you if they are available... so you just have to hit next, next, next, next until you see something you like!
Good luck :)

P.S. why didn't I register lots of domain names back in 1998? Or say 1995?  At the very least why didn't I register alexblack.com?  Was your foresight better than mine, did you register some good names back then? sex.com anyone? :)

I wish I registered domain names when I was young, but they were a lot more expensive back then and I was just a kid.

One site you didn't mention is domai.nr, which is pretty damn cool and sexy looking. If I think of something good nowadays, I'll generally register it because I know the next time I look it will be gone.

I did a non-profit back in University and tried to register the .com a few times on flakey wireless, didn't work, came back a few days later to try again and it was registered by a holding company. Same thing for a name I was interested in and kept looking up, but never buying. Now it's also held forever by a holding company.

I emailed the guy who owns metal.com, he said to make him an offer in the low 6 digits and then we'll talk, he also runs a law firm... Maybe in a few years...

Also, you want to talk hard to get domain names, try to get an Albanian domain name, now that's a challenge...

@Chronos: Yeah do you ever fear that merely by *checking* for a domain name someone is watching and will register it before you can? Perhaps thats what happened with your flakey wireless.

Wow, yeah, Albanian domain names do look hard to get... $159/year, and passport required etc.. Not like registering a .CA, what does that require, I think just clicking a button saying "I am Canadian"? :)

There are a number of times I've found a domain name taken already, and I'm sure the owner probably wants at least $10,000 for the name... maybe more in some cases.

Actually I believe there was a practice, or still is, wherein as soon as you search for a domain, that company will register it and hold it so you can't buy it anywhere else (but they don't tell you this), and after the 3 or 4 day legal period where they can get a full refund, they release it. I'm not sure if GoDaddy was in kahoots with a holding company or publishes which domains are search for, but I definitely got screwed twice by the same company!

Yeah, the Albanian one is hard, you need someone living in Albania with a passport, so you need to find a trustworthy Albanian business owner who can register and manage for you!

I have a few Canadian ones, definitely much easier :D

Sometimes it's worth it to just try and email people asking how much they want for it, because you never know, it could be some guy like us who's not really using it and who doesn't want to be a total dick, but then again, chances are slim, haha!

I'd hoped to buy alfx.com, which is part of my license plate, and by accident is almost my name.. I pronounce it al-fex, but its taken by what looks like a church website in england! I asked if they wanted to sell, they said no.. Maybe I should offer them some $ :)
